We arrived at the rented apartment in Villefranche sur Mere, we had a nice stay and left the apartment as we had found it. We never met any host and we did not have an opportunity to verify the aprtment when we arrived or when we left.

We were surprised to receive a demand for the cost of a broken lock. I refused the payment and the request was taken up by the resolution centre, who unsurprisingly sided in the favour of the host.

The main argument of the host was that 'it could only have been me' - despite a cleaner and an apartment manager having access to the apartment.

I was under the impression that the onus was on the host to prove breakages, which is why they should carry out a check at the beginning and end of every stay.
